The Journey

Corunna - northern coast of Spain

Monday, 11th December, 1847

Running along a rocky shore - picturesque headlands with a magnificent surf breaking upon them. Made Corunna & anchored in the harbour about noon. We went on shore in boats which the Spaniards were not a little pleased to bring us & for which they charged a shilling a head. After that we saw the town, churches &c - did some shopping - & then our group dined at the Hotel de Corunna, & enjoyed our Spanish dinner very much. When we were ready to go on board, we found the 'city gates' locked, so we got over the wall, & let ourselves down by a rope into a boat which took us to the Tay. What a ridiculous plan to lock a town up at six o'clock, & yet to care so little about the matter, that a party of foreigners could escape over the walls!
