New Orleans
Thursday, 3rd February - Friday, 12th May, 1848
On the whole I have liked New Orleans very much; & for a man who has plenty of business it is a capital place, as there are facilities for doing business on a large scale. What a pity that the land is not higher, or that New Orleans had not been built so soon for then the deposit from the river would gradually have raised the surface, & made dry land in what now is a very dubious substance. The Mississippi when full is above the level of the streets, & if you dig a foot or so into the earth at any point you are in water.
