The Journey

Washington

Tuesday, 30th May, 1848

The rotunda forms a marble vestibule & altogether the Capitol is much superior to what I expected, the grounds about it are also very pretty. Saw the Presidents House, Treasury buildings, Post Office department, Patent office &c &c. Altogether much pleased with Washington, it is the only town I saw which seems to have been laid out for a capital at first, & nothing else. It is rather straggling yet; & they have begun more than they have been able to finish but all that will be remedied in time.
