The Journey
West Indies
Monday, 3rd January, 1848
The day as delightful as can be imagined. I saw flying fish for the first time, they skim along as fast as a swallow, & indeed rather like one, & fly perhaps 50 to 100 yards at a time. Two larger fish followed the ship for some time. They appeared to be 20 or 30 feet long, called the grampus. The Governor tells me that I may very easily gratify my desire to possess an island by purchasing one of the Bahamas which might be done for very little, & it would pay well to grow fruit.
